We have mirrors!

Hi friends,

Sorry bout the long quiet; we’ve been having ourselves a busy ol time. But we’re still having fun and we’re so very excited to have such a big adventure on our plate.

We did plenty of work in Renovationland, but just as exciting was a visit with our friend Marina, who’s unloading a house full of antiques. We picked up not one, not two, but SIX beeeeeauuutiful antique mirrors!

The first one will probably end up gracing Erica’s station in the new salon. If they fit nicely, the other ones will end up in the salon as well. The ceiling of the salon is very low, so anything we can do to make the space feel bigger will be worth it!

Back in Renovationland, we FILLED our second dumpster, again with the generous assistance of Michael Nerrie. My mom also got in on the action!

When we were first considering buying the space, the prospect of removing the enormous hood vent in the old kitchen space was one of the most daunting tasks to me. I just couldn’t imagine the process.

One of my favorite things about this whole experience is that Erica and I have both really learned how to just put our heads down and do the work, whether it’s applying for loans or tearing down walls or digging ditches. I took my dad’s sawzall and just sliced up the hood vent. It was incredibly gratifying.

Unfortunately my dad’s sawzall didn’t make it through the ordeal and had to be replaced. Sorry poppa.

The last big thing we did was dig in the dirt outside #94. The building is built right into the side of a hill, and the hill has shifted over time and risen above the height of the retaining wall in spots. As a result, water leaks in when it rains or when the snow thaws.

So we’re working to lower the grade so it lives below those spots. Once it warms up, we’ll push the hill back further and put up some retaining walls.

That’s it for now, folks. I’ll be adding a gallery to the website soon, and we’ll try to be better about taking more pictures. It’s been harder than expected to remember to stop for 5 seconds and take a picture of what we’re doing. It’ll be fun for us to look back once the spaces are finished.
